A Children’s Dentist in Chicago on Protruding Teeth

Children can develop various cosmetic dental issues which may impact their overall dental health. Protruding teeth is an example of a typical cosmetic flaw that actually puts kids at an increased risk of experiencing dental trauma. This is because teeth that protrude stick out past the point of their lips, which leaves them vulnerable to accidents.

Protruding teeth are often called “buck teeth,” or may be classified as an overbite. Overbites are known to cause speech impediments, tooth or gum damage, breathing issues, chewing difficulties, etc. Overbites can usually be treated with orthodontic therapies, such as Invisalign or traditional braces, but occasionally cases are severe enough that they require surgery.

Treatment for protruding teeth may vary depending on the cause. Continue reading to learn more about some common causes of protruding teeth.

  • Genetics

A child’s jaw shape is something they inherit, and occasionally the shape of the jaw will actually cause an overbite and lead to protruding teeth. This cannot be prevented, but avoiding certain behaviors which worsen the condition, and orthodontic treatments, can help.

  • Amount of Teeth

If a child has too many teeth in their mouth, this can cause overcrowding. Overcrowded teeth push against each other, thereby pushing some teeth past the lips. This will usually lead to the development of an overbite.

Missing teeth can also cause protrusion, since tooth shifting is inevitable when there are gaps between baby or permanent teeth. Various bite alignment issues can arise as a result, including an overbite.

  • Thumb Sucking & Pacifiers

Thumb sucking is a natural part of growing up for many children, but kids who suck on their fingers and thumbs past the ages of 3 and 4 can actually impact their bite development. The pressure caused by finger sucking can force upper front teeth to erupt at an angle, causing the teeth to push towards the opening of the mouth. Pacifiers used for too long also pose the same threat to children’s teeth.

  • Tongue Thrust

Tongue thrust is when the tongue pushes between the upper and lower rows of teeth when a person swallows, rather than the tip of the tongue pressing against the gum tissue behind the top teeth. Tongue thrust often leads to an open bite, but can also cause an overbite.

We were recently in the Chicago area visiting family when my 5 yr old son chipped a tooth while playing with his cousins. My sister-in-law called Chicago Kidds (her kid's dentist) to see if they could see my son on short notice. Not only did they squeeze him in on what appeared to be a very busy day, the staff was very friendly and they did a great job fixing the tooth. Thanks Chicago Kidds, you guys are awesome!

Best children’s dentist in the southern suburbs! They are patient and kind with the kids, explaining their procedures every step of the way. Office staff are super friendly. Sanitization and distance procedures are currently in place. My kids actually like going to the dentist.
