What is A Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation in which your child is in pain or has suffered an injury to the teeth, gums, jaw, or soft oral tissues. For example, if your child is at risk of losing a permanent tooth, this is a situation that requires immediate attention.

If your child is experiencing oral pain or discomfort of any kind, it’s important to seek medical assistance. Don’t hesitate to contact our team at Chicago KiDDS Pediatric Dentistry for emergency services!

When Should You Contact A Chicago Emergency Dentist?

You should contact an emergency dentist when your child is in pain or they’ve suffered an oral injury. Additionally, knowing how to address such situations will help you assess what the next steps should be.

Common Dental Emergencies

  • Injured Soft Tissue (Tongue, Lips, or Cheeks)

If the wound is bleeding, apply firm (but gentle) pressure to the area and ice to bruised areas. If bleeding has not stopped after 15 minutes, take your child to the emergency room.

  • Broken Braces or Wires

When someone is wearing traditional metal braces, brackets and wires will occasionally come loose or break. However, if the broken appliance is not causing any discomfort, a same-day appointment may not be necessary.

  • Chipped or Fractured Tooth

If a child breaks or chips a tooth, you’ll need to schedule an emergency dental appointment. Before the appointment, rinse the area with warm water and apply a cold compress. If there are broken tooth fragments, collect them and make sure there are none left behind in the mouth.

  • Knocked Out (Permanent) Tooth

If your child has lost a permanent tooth, you’ll need to make an emergency dental appointment. Bring the tooth with you to the dental office. When gathering the tooth, pick it up gently by its crown, never the root, and rinse it without handling it too much.

Attempt to reinsert the tooth into its socket. Then, use a clean cloth or gauze to hold it in place until you get to the dentist. If you cannot reinsert your child’s tooth, you can transport it in a small container of milk.

  • Excessive Bleeding After A Baby Tooth Falls Out

Bleeding after losing a baby tooth is normal. However, if bleeding does not stop after 15 minutes you should take your child to the emergency room. Apply pressure to the area as soon as the tooth falls out. Then watch the clock to see if the bleeding stops in a reasonable amount of time.

  • Dental Abscess

A dental abscess is a sign of infection. If you notice a bump on your child’s gums, redness, or swelling, these are common symptoms of a dental abscess. Your child may also be in pain, have a fever, difficulty chewing or opening their mouth, or complain of a bad taste in their mouth.

If your child has a dental abscess, it’s important to get them to a dentist as soon as possible. An untreated infection can lead to serious health problems.

  • Broken Jaw

If your child has or might have a broken jaw, take them to the emergency room immediately. You can gently tie your child’s mouth closed with a towel or necktie to keep the jaw stable during travel.

We were recently in the Chicago area visiting family when my 5 yr old son chipped a tooth while playing with his cousins. My sister-in-law called Chicago Kidds (her kid's dentist) to see if they could see my son on short notice. Not only did they squeeze him in on what appeared to be a very busy day, the staff was very friendly and they did a great job fixing the tooth. Thanks Chicago Kidds, you guys are awesome!

Best children’s dentist in the southern suburbs! They are patient and kind with the kids, explaining their procedures every step of the way. Office staff are super friendly. Sanitization and distance procedures are currently in place. My kids actually like going to the dentist.
