Managing Dental Anxiety in Kids: Tips for Parents

A trip to the dentist can be stressful for kids, especially if they’ve had a previous bad experience or are unsure of what to expect.

Dental anxiety in children is common, but with the right approach, parents can help their kids feel comfortable and even enjoy appointments. Understanding how to prepare a child for dental work can make a big difference in their experience.

Why Do Kids Get Dental Anxiety?

Children may feel nervous about dental visits for several reasons:

  • Fear of the unknown – Not knowing what will happen during a dental appointment can cause anxiety.
  • Past negative experiences – A past dental procedure that was uncomfortable or stressful may lead to long-term fear.
  • Sensory sensitivity – The sounds, smells, and sensations at the dentist’s office can be overwhelming.
  • Parental influence – If parents have anxiety surrounding their child’s appointment or going to the dentist, a child may pick up on these concerns and start to feel nervous, too.

If your child has a fear of the dentist, there are things you can do to help reduce their anxiety. Continue reading to learn some helpful ways you can turn dental check-ups into a fun part of life.

How To Prepare a Child for Dental Work

1. Start Early With Positive Experiences

The best way to prevent dental anxiety in kids is to make dental appointments a normal part of your child’s routine. Early, positive dental experiences help them feel comfortable and familiar with the dentist’s office. It also gives your child a chance to get to know their dentist so they don’t think of them as a total stranger.

Early-age dental care also helps them get used to exams and teeth cleanings, which are important preventative treatments.

2. Use Positive Language

When discussing an upcoming dental visit, avoid negative or scary words. Instead, use reassuring and encouraging phrases such as:

  • “The dentist will count your teeth and make sure they’re super healthy.”
  • “You get to sit in a special chair, just like astronauts!”
  • “The dentist will make your smile extra bright!”

Positive language can help your child learn how not to be scared of the dentist. The right wording can make it feel like a fun and exciting experience instead of something to fear.

3. Role-Play a Dental Appointment at Home

Before a pediatric dental check-up, play pretend dentist at home. Let your child sit in a chair while you count their teeth with a toothbrush. It’s even better if you include one of their favorite toys, like a doll or stuffed animal, in the “dental treatment.”

You can also take turns, letting them be the “dentist” and check your teeth. This fun activity helps kids become familiar with the process of a traditional appointment, reducing anxiety.

4. Choose a Pediatric Dentist

A pediatric dentist specializes in treating children and is trained to help anxious patients feel at ease in the dental chair. At Chicago kiDDS, our office is a child-friendly, welcoming environment. Our professionals are compassionate, answer kids’ questions, and use child-friendly language. We also use special techniques to help reduce any discomfort during procedures.

5. Bring Comfort Items

Let your child bring a favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or toy to their dental visit. Familiar objects can help them feel more secure and relaxed during the appointment. For older kids and teens, encourage them to bring headphones with them so they can listen to music during check-ups.

6. Stay Calm and Supportive

Children often mirror their parents’ emotions. If you appear nervous, they may feel anxious, too. Stay calm, smile, and speak in a reassuring tone. Let them know you’re there to support them.

7. Offer Praise and Small Rewards

Encourage your child with positive reinforcement after their dental visit. Say things like:

  • “You did an amazing job today!”
  • “I’m so proud of you for being brave!”
  • “Your teeth look so clean and shiny now!”

A small reward, like a sticker or a fun activity afterward, can help your child associate the dentist with positive experiences.

8. Read Books and Watch Videos About the Dentist

Children’s books and videos can help explain what happens at the dentist in a fun, engaging way. Use these types of kid-friendly educational tools to help your child learn about the dentist and what they do to protect their teeth.

We were recently in the Chicago area visiting family when my 5 yr old son chipped a tooth while playing with his cousins. My sister-in-law called Chicago Kidds (her kid's dentist) to see if they could see my son on short notice. Not only did they squeeze him in on what appeared to be a very busy day, the staff was very friendly and they did a great job fixing the tooth. Thanks Chicago Kidds, you guys are awesome!
