What Should I Do If My Toddler Chips a Tooth?

Toddlers trip while running, tumble off furniture, and sometimes fall before a parent has time to react. If your child gets up with a chipped tooth, it can be difficult to tell whether you are looking at a minor cosmetic problem or an injury that needs immediate attention.

If your toddler chips a tooth, check their mouth for bleeding or other injuries, rinse gently with water, save any tooth fragments you can find, and contact your pediatric dentist. Even a small chip is worth discussing with a dentist because it is not always possible to tell how deeply the tooth has been damaged just by looking at it.

At Chicago kiDDS Pediatric Dentistry, we provide emergency dental care for children with chipped, broken, and injured teeth. If your toddler has damaged a tooth, call (708) 448-6700 for guidance.

What Should I Do Right After My Toddler Chips a Tooth?

First, stay calm and check your child for any other injuries. A fall that damages a tooth can also injure the lips, gums, tongue, or face.

Once you have made sure your child is otherwise okay:

  • Gently rinse their mouth with water.
  • If there is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze.
  • Use a cold compress on the outside of the face if there is swelling.
  • Look for the broken piece of tooth and save it if you can find it.
  • Avoid letting your child bite hard foods with the injured tooth.
  • Call your pediatric dentist and describe what happened.

If you find a broken tooth fragment, bring it to the dental appointment. Do not attempt to reattach the piece yourself.

Is a Chipped Baby Tooth an Emergency?

Not every chipped baby tooth requires immediate treatment, but every dental injury deserves attention.

A tiny chip involving only the outer enamel may not cause pain or require extensive treatment. A deeper fracture can expose the dentin underneath the enamel or reach the pulp, which contains the tooth’s nerves and blood vessels.

Because parents cannot reliably determine how deep a fracture goes at home, it is a good idea to contact your child’s pediatric dentist after an injury.

Your child should be evaluated more urgently if the tooth is badly broken, loose, pushed out of position, or causing significant pain. Bleeding that will not stop, substantial swelling, or signs of a more serious facial injury also require prompt attention.

If you’re unsure how serious the injury is, call Chicago kiDDS Pediatric Dentistry at (708) 448-6700. We can help you determine the appropriate next step.

What Does a Chipped Tooth Look Like in a Toddler?

A chipped tooth can look different depending on the type and extent of the injury.

You may notice that the edge of a front tooth suddenly looks uneven or that a small corner is missing. Larger fractures can make a tooth appear significantly shorter or reveal a different color beneath the white enamel.

Your toddler’s behavior can provide clues too. A child with a deeper injury may avoid biting with the tooth, complain that it hurts, or react to hot or cold foods and drinks.

Keep in mind that toddlers may have difficulty telling you exactly where or how much something hurts. A child who seems unusually upset while eating or resists having the area touched may be experiencing dental pain.

What If My Toddler Chipped a Tooth but Isn’t in Pain?

Lack of pain does not necessarily mean the tooth is okay.

Small enamel chips may cause little or no discomfort. However, some dental injuries can affect the inside of the tooth without producing obvious symptoms immediately.

A pediatric dentist can examine the tooth to determine the extent of the damage. Dental X-rays may sometimes be recommended to evaluate the tooth, root, and surrounding structures after an injury.

This is particularly important with baby teeth because the developing permanent teeth are located underneath them.

How Does a Pediatric Dentist Treat a Chipped Baby Tooth?

Treatment depends on the size and depth of the chip, which tooth was injured, your child’s age, and whether the tooth’s pulp or root has been affected.

A very small chip may only need to be monitored or smoothed if there is a sharp edge. Other fractures may require a dental restoration to protect the remaining tooth.

More serious injuries require an individualized treatment plan. The dentist will consider whether the tooth can remain healthy and functional, how close your child is to naturally losing that baby tooth, and whether there is any risk to the surrounding tissues or developing permanent tooth.

At Chicago kiDDS, we take a conservative approach to pediatric dental treatment whenever possible. We’ll evaluate the injury and explain what we find so you understand whether treatment is necessary and why.

Why Treat a Chipped Baby Tooth If It Will Fall Out Anyway?

Baby teeth are temporary, but they still have an important job.

Primary teeth help toddlers chew food, develop clear speech, and maintain space for the permanent teeth developing underneath them. A damaged baby tooth can also become painful or develop complications if the injury affects the inner part of the tooth.

The fact that a tooth will eventually fall out does mean it doesn’t need treatment. A pediatric dentist will consider your child’s age, which tooth was injured, the severity of the damage, and how long the tooth would normally remain in place.

Can a Chipped Baby Tooth Become Infected?

A deeper dental injury can damage the pulp inside a tooth. If the pulp is exposed or damaged, bacteria may be able to enter the tooth and an infection can develop.

Signs that an injured tooth needs another evaluation can include:

  • Increasing pain or sensitivity
  • Swelling around the tooth or gums
  • A bump on the gum near the injured tooth
  • Facial swelling
  • A change in the color of the tooth
  • Difficulty biting or eating

These symptoms can develop over time, so continue keeping an eye on the tooth even if your toddler seems fine immediately afterward.

Why Is My Toddler’s Chipped Tooth Turning Gray?

Sometimes a baby tooth becomes gray, brown, or darker after being hit. This can happen even when the tooth was not badly chipped at the time of the injury.

A color change can indicate that the pulp inside the tooth was affected by the trauma. However, the appearance of the tooth alone does not tell you whether it is infected or whether treatment is necessary.

If you notice that an injured tooth is changing color, contact your pediatric dentist for an evaluation. Also watch for pain, swelling, or a bump on the gums.

What If the Tooth Is Loose After the Accident?

A tooth that moves after an injury may have experienced more than a simple chip.

Do not repeatedly wiggle the tooth to see how loose it is. Contact your pediatric dentist so they can determine whether the tooth has been displaced or whether its supporting tissues have been injured.

Treatment depends partly on whether the injured tooth is a baby tooth or a permanent tooth. This distinction is important because injuries to primary teeth are managed differently from injuries to permanent teeth.

Can I Prevent My Toddler From Chipping Another Tooth?

You cannot prevent every toddler accident. Learning to walk, run, and climb naturally comes with occasional falls.

You can reduce some risks by childproofing sharp furniture edges, keeping floors and stairs clear of hazards, and using appropriate safety equipment during activities where facial injuries are possible.

Regular pediatric dental visits are helpful as well. Your dentist can monitor an injured tooth over time and make sure your child’s other teeth remain healthy as their mouth develops.

When Should I Call a Pediatric Dentist About a Chipped Tooth?

It is best to contact your child’s dentist whenever a tooth has been noticeably chipped or broken. Describe what happened, how the tooth looks, whether it is loose, and whether your child seems to be in pain.

Seek prompt care when there is significant pain, swelling, a badly fractured or displaced tooth, or other signs of a serious dental injury. If your child has experienced significant trauma beyond the teeth and mouth, seek appropriate emergency medical care.

After the initial injury, keep watching the tooth. Changes in color, new pain, swelling, or a bump on the gums are reasons to have it reevaluated.

We were recently in the Chicago area visiting family when my 5 yr old son chipped a tooth while playing with his cousins. My sister-in-law called Chicago Kidds (her kid's dentist) to see if they could see my son on short notice. Not only did they squeeze him in on what appeared to be a very busy day, the staff was very friendly and they did a great job fixing the tooth. Thanks Chicago Kidds, you guys are awesome!
