Why Is My Child’s Tooth Turning Grey?

If one of your child’s teeth suddenly looks grey, or darker than the ones next to it, a recent bump or fall is usually the culprit. In fact, it’s pretty common for a tooth to change color days or even weeks after an accident happens.

Seeing a grey tooth can be alarming, but it doesn’t automatically mean it needs to be pulled or that there’s a serious infection. It just tells us that the inside of the tooth took a bit of a hit. A quick visit to a pediatric dentist will help determine whether it requires any treatment.

If you’ve noticed a dark or discolored tooth, the infant dentists at Chicago kiDDS Pediatric Dentistry are here to help you figure out what’s going on and what to do next.

What Makes a Child’s Tooth Turn Grey?

When a tooth gets bumped, the tiny blood vessels inside it can get injured. Changes in the pulp (the soft center of the tooth) are what cause that gradual darkening, much like a bruise under the surface.

This happens all the time with front teeth, especially since toddlers and young kids are constantly tumbling, jumping, and exploring.

The catch? The original injury might not have seemed like a big deal at the time. Your child may have tripped weeks ago, cried for a couple of minutes, and moved right on. That slow color change might be the first real sign that the tooth was affected.

How Long Does It Take for the Color to Change?

An injured tooth rarely turns grey right away. It often takes days or weeks for the discoloration to show up, which is why parents don’t always connect the dots between a grey tooth and a playground bump from a month ago.

If you notice a color change, try to think back to any recent tumbles, sports incidents, or rough-and-tumble play. But don’t worry if nothing comes to mind—it’s still a good idea to have a dentist take a look.

Does a Grey Baby Tooth Mean the Tooth is “Dead”?

Not necessarily.

While a grey baby tooth means the pulp inside reacted to trauma, color alone doesn’t tell the whole story. To figure out if the tooth is healthy, your child’s pediatric dentist will look at the bigger picture:

  • Is the tooth loose?
  • Is your child having any pain or sensitivity?
  • Are there any subtle signs of infection on the gums?

Depending on what they see, they may take an X-ray to check below the surface. In many cases, a dark baby tooth can safely stay right where it is without causing any trouble—it just needs routine monitoring.

Will It Ever Turn White Again?

It actually might! Sometimes a traumatized tooth slowly lightens back up over time, while other teeth stay dark.

It all depends on how the internal tissues heal. Because the outcome varies, we focus on how the tooth is behaving rather than just how it looks. Even if the tooth brightens up, you’ll still want to keep an eye out for any pain, swelling, or changes in the surrounding gums.

When Should I Be Concerned?

If the tooth is grey but your child feels fine, it’s usually not a late-night emergency, though you should still call to book a checkup. However, you’ll want to get in touch right away if you notice any of these warning signs:

  • Tooth pain or new sensitivity to heat or cold
  • Swelling around the gums or in the face
  • A small, pimple-like bump or pus on the gums near the tooth
  • Pain when biting down or eating
  • Increasing looseness
  • A fever accompanied by gum or facial swelling

These signs mean the tooth might be developing an infection and needs prompt attention.

(Note: If your child has significant facial swelling or seems generally unwell, seek urgent medical right away.)

Can a Grey Tooth Get Infected?

It can. If trauma damages the pulp severely enough, bacteria can creep in and cause an infection around the root. Parents often notice this as a tiny bump on the gumline, sometimes paired with tenderness or swelling.

You don’t need to wait for symptoms like these to pop up, though. Having a dentist check the tooth early gives you peace of mind that everything is healing safely underneath.

What If It’s My Toddler’s Front Tooth?

Toddlers are still mastering their balance, so front-tooth impacts are practically a rite of passage, whether they bumped into the bathtub, a toy, or the living room coffee table.

If your toddler’s tooth is darkening, reach out to a pediatric dentist. Resist the urge to wiggle or pull the tooth yourself. A dentist can gently examine the area to make sure the root is stable and guide you on what to watch for at home.

Can a Chipped Tooth Also Turn Grey?

Yes. An impact hard enough to chip the outside of a tooth can also shock the inside tissue. Even if the chip looks minor, the force behind it can still affect the pulp, so it’s always smart to have a dentist take a peek.

What About Other Colors?

Grey isn’t the only color you might see. Children’s teeth can shift to yellow, brown, black, or even develop tiny white spots for a variety of reasons:

  • Surface stains: Often caused by certain foods, drinks, or medications.
  • Yellow/Brown: Can indicate plaque buildup or early decay.
  • White spots: Frequently tied to changes in enamel development.

A single tooth that changes color after a bump is quite different from widespread staining. If you’re ever unsure about what’s causing a color change, an exam is the easiest way to get answers.

Could This Hurt Their Permanent Tooth?

Because baby teeth sit directly above the adult teeth developing under the gums, significant trauma to a baby tooth can sometimes impact the permanent tooth below.

How much risk there is depends on your child’s age and how hard the impact was. Pediatric dentists are specially trained to keep an eye on developing smiles, so any recommendation will balance the health of the baby tooth with the long-term safety of the incoming permanent tooth.

How Are Grey Teeth Treated?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

If the tooth is stable and symptom-free, monitoring it during regular checkups is often all that’s needed. If there are signs of infection or severe damage, treatment may be necessary. Your child’s age plays a big role, too—a loose baby tooth that’s about to fall out anyway will be handled differently than a tooth that needs to stick around for a few more years.

At Chicago kiDDS Pediatric Dentistry, we lean into conservative care. We evaluate the tooth, your child’s comfort level, and their overall growth before recommending any next steps.

Should I Schedule an Appointment?

Yes. Any time a tooth noticeably changes color, especially after a bump, it’s worth a quick checkup with your pediatric dentist.

It doesn’t mean treatment is in your future. The main goal of the visit is simple: figure out why the color changed, make sure your child is comfortable, and set up a plan to monitor it.

We were recently in the Chicago area visiting family when my 5 yr old son chipped a tooth while playing with his cousins. My sister-in-law called Chicago Kidds (her kid's dentist) to see if they could see my son on short notice. Not only did they squeeze him in on what appeared to be a very busy day, the staff was very friendly and they did a great job fixing the tooth. Thanks Chicago Kidds, you guys are awesome!
